Kevin Low was born in Forfar, Scotland, where he grew up in isolated cottages and hamlets throughout the peculiar triangle marked out by the small sandstone towns of Brechin, Montrose and Forfar. This is something he says, that’s left, ‘a not unwelcome scar on my psyche.’
Low works primarily in digital painting, characteristically producing his work in editions of 7 or 10. A figurative artist, his subjects play out moments from his biography.
‘Everything seems quite lovely, there are flowers, butterflies, birds populate the blue skies; but look again. Those clouds are turning from fluffy white to orange. Characters partially clothed linger in woods that are all fairy tale lovely. In one painting there’s a figure who poses, quite happily while on fire; in another a scalding liquid become suspended picturesquely just above a knee. It's an odd world.’
Low spent several years working as a theatre photographer - he studied photography at Edinburgh’s Napier University - working with many companies including Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, Tramway and the Traverse Theatre.
He currently lives and works in Glasgow.
